Coaching with John Dudley by an 'Archery Mum'

(December Update)

With John just back from coaching Gladys Willems I arranged to go across to Liverpool for a couple of days to see John and get some coaching. The aim was to concentrate on fine tuning my number 2 bow for indoors and doing some work at the gym on a fitness program I could do when I got back home.

It was an early 8am start, the first coaching session had John looking for any bad habits I had developed since I last saw him. Although we have been using video and photos, there is nothing like seeing it first hand. We worked on a couple of things and John made some tweaks to the bow. We compared several sets of arrows and John decided I needed to fit my old arrow rest back on as he thought it was working better for me.

The next session was at the gym near to Johns house. John went through a comprehensive regime split down over 3 days. I have already ordered a bench and some weights so I can get started ASAP. With John being taught fitness by Arnold Schwarzenegger's coach I felt confident that the routine he worked up for me would be good.

My third session of the trip was back on the range where John again did some bow tweaks, experimenting with some new D-Loop material which is much thinner than normal, making a better knot. I also got to have a look at the new back strap version of the evolution due out early 2008. I think Trevor is already putting his order in for one as he was very impressed with the build quality.

This trip was more fun than hard work, although I did plenty of work. We managed to take plenty of video of the training sessions and some photos (below). As usual John was interested in the progress of our club juniors and sent them a video message.

Coaching with John Dudley by an 'Archery Mum' (July Update)

John and I met up for another coaching session on the 17th of July while he was carrying out some seminars at Bowsports. I felt that this session was particularly useful because not only were we able to go over specific areas of my shooting style but we also went over some technical aspects of the bow setup. This included swapping strings and cables, how to check the cams for timing and alignment and how to correct bow setup problems such as cam lean. John also took a brand new string and cable set I had taken along and stripped the serving back, showing me how it is important to select the correct size of centre serving to match the arrow nocks. We also did some work on getting my peep set correctly for 70m and the adjustments that would need to be made for the indoor season.

Here are some photos taken at session on July 17th

Original Article below:

As a mum of 3 boys I came to archery only recently after getting involved watching my youngest son shoot and being encouraged by club members to 'have-a-go' myself. I shot recurve for about 6 months and then in November I made the change to compound.

My husband keeps telling me it is the only sport in our 21 years of marriage that I have stuck with. After some initial coaching at the club and encouraging progress, I decided to look for some dedicated compound coaching.

Many of you reading this will be familiar with the name 'John Dudley' from the Glade magazine and his International reputation. John shoots at the highest level and achieved worldwide success. As well as being the 2006 UK indoor champion, bronze medalist at the World Field Championships and Australian gold medalist he has represented his home country (USA) and been National IBO champion. More can be found out about John on his own website - here

John also enjoys a reputation as one of the Worlds leading compound coaches. When I saw an opportunity to get some 1 to 1 coaching with John I didn't take much persuading to book it. I know there has been recent discussion on Archery Interchange about the value of 'paid coaching'. My opinion is very much that it has been worthwhile and something I will be continuing in the future. After all if I had taken up golf I would have probably paid a 'Pro' to teach me the basics.

John is very friendly and makes you feel at ease, he was able to quickly assess my current level of shooting and the issues that needed addressing. The first stage involved photographing me during my shot sequence. We then went over this on John's computer. This was a very useful initial step as I was able to see and hear from John, what I needed to work on - they say a picture is worth 1000 words! John then went through a process of rebuilding my shot sequence, trying changes out at each stage. Finally some adjustments were made to the bow itself and other recommendations made.

The first coaching session with John was very productive and worth the time and effort involved in travelling. I am looking forward to next months session.
